Illuminating the Intersection Between Biology, Emotion, and Spirituality

Modern Spirit seeks to demonstrate the value of spiritual healing in modern healthcare. Modern Spirit works to support research and provide educational programs that will promote the sharing and integration of knowledge drawn from scientific research, clinical experience, and spiritual practice; to the community and to healthcare providers. Modern Spirit is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code. Donations to assist us with our work are tax deductible.

Why Now

Current Western culture has by in large neglected the importance of emotional and spiritual well-being in mental and physical healthcare. This oversight has contributed to the growing epidemic of mental health and psychosomatic disorders, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and addiction. For years, many affected individuals have been driven to seek more holistic approaches beyond the confines of established healthcare. In search of a broader paradigm, many have journeyed into more mystical traditions, Eastern spirituality and, more recently, Amazonian shamanism.

Modern Spirit is working to expand our culture’s understanding of health and illness. In doing so, we hope to bring emotional and spiritual healing home.

Our Work

In pursuit of our mission, Modern Spirit is supporting scientific research through the Modern Spirit Epigenetics Project, developing educational programs, including the Emotional Biology 101 Podcast Series, and building our community network. We want to learn more about how:

  • Trauma healing affects emotional biology.
  • Spiritual health manifests in emotional well-being.
  • Spiritual healing is connected to spiritual practice.

Our first research project is the Modern Spirit Epigenetics (MSEP), currently conducted by psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Rael Cahn MD PhD at the University of Southern California and supported by our research team. In collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), we have begun to collect saliva samples from participants in the landmark MAPS MDMA-assisted Psychotherapy for PTSD Study. We will evaluate these samples in the laboratory, searching for epigenetic changes. In doing so, we will investigate the biochemical effects of this form of intensive therapy. Your donations will us help to realize this groundbreaking work and advance the science of trauma healing. Learn more about our research projects here.
